Eins weiß man hier sicher — wie man Geld verdient!

Einer der größten und am meisten von den Medien begleiteten Pleiten war die von Circuit City — einem Elektronikhändler vom Format Mediamarkt. Mehr Infos gibts bei Google News, es z.B. bei der NYT. In Manchester (wirklich hübscher Ort hier in der Gegend) gab es mal einen und ich bin zufällig dran vorbeigekommen. Eine gute Gelegenheit für das persönliche Rezessions-Photo-Shooting!

Das einzig noch bildhaftere Foto der Krise könnte man glaube ich nur in Detroit vor dem GM Renaissance Center schießen.

Fellow students,

Today, Governor Rell proposed further cuts to UConn’s budget and asked the state legislature to suspend all university construction projects for the next year. These cuts come at an especially difficult time, as the national economy is in crisis and students across the country are finding it more difficult than ever to afford higher education.

Earlier this week, President Hogan released a statement that guaranteed that financial aid will not be cut and that UConn tuition will not be increased this academic year. We applaud these decisions. However, a wide range of UConn programs including research, graduate student programs, adjunct faculty and student activities are likely to be affected in the near future.

Concerned about these cuts, USG [Anm. der Redaktion: Undergraduate Student Government – am ehsten ein Asta] was joined by dozens of UConn students at the state capitol today, as we rallied in support of higher education. While in Hartford, we met with legislative leaders including House Majority Leader Denise Merrill and Senate Pro Tempore Don Williams, who assured us that they would be working to help UConn in this difficult economic climate.

However, we realize that many students are already struggling to afford higher education and thus we are asking each and every UConn student to get involved. Please consider attending a UConn budget presentation or writing your state legislator to let them know how important affordable education is to you. In the meantime, the USG website will be providing up-to-date coverage of the cuts and more ways that students can get involved. For more information, please visit www.usg.uconn.edu

Bekommen wir Budgetkürzungen in Deutschland nicht mit oder ist die Universitätsfinanzierung bei uns „fest“? Hier geht das nämlich ganz schnell mit den Budgetkürzungen …

• Der Bursar schaut komisch wenn man ihm Bündelweise $20 Noten zum bezahlen vorlegt. Aber der Kurs von 1.30 muss genutzt werden
• 2 von 4 Finals sind rum, bisher lief alles ok bis gut. Mal sehen
• stk schafft es sogar halbwegs sich hier zu beschäftigen, mit Backen, Fotographieren und Türen abschließen :>
• Hier regnets, scheiß Wetter!
• Wer eine frisch-an-der-UConn Perspektive lesen will soll bei stk vorbeischauen!

billiger in den USA:

• Benzin, die Gallon (~3.7l) gibts in CT grad für $3.42. Wer bei Citgo tankt ist ein schlechter Ami Auch wenn sie meist am billigsten sind.
• Klamotter aller Art, ich war erst heute nochmal im Outlet und habe umgerechnet 110 € für eine Hose, eine Pullover, 5 Boxershorts, ein Paar Handschuhe und einen Gürtel ausgegeben. Achja, alles Markenklamotten!
• Elektronik, auch jeder Art. Das meiste hat den gleichen Preis in US$ wie €, dh. man kommt bei Elektronik eigentlich immer gut weg.
• Essen gehen ist auch für eher ärmere Studenten durchaus bezahlbar und der durchschnittliche Diner bietet gute Qualität. Ein preiswertes Frühstück gibts auch immer beim Dunkin‘ Donut.

macht keinen Unteschied

• Alkohol ist eigentlich genauso teuer wenn man nicht gerade Importkram will.
• Autoreparaturen sind auch ähnlich teuer wie daheim ._.

teurer in den USA:

• gute Lebensmittel! Klar gibts Ramen im Wal-Mart billig aber was gescheites ist gleich teurer und gibts nur in „europäischeren“, teuren Supermärkten wie Big Y.
• Studium, dazu muss ich denke ich nichts sagen
• Öffentlicher Nahverkehr, da quasi inexistent können AmTrak und PeterPan/Greyhound teilweise unverschämte Preise verlangen
• Eintrittspreise, teilweise verlangen sogar die grottigsten Bars $5 Eintritt für nichts. Ein guter Club in Montreal hat andere Deutsche auch schon mal $25 Eintritt gekostet
• Maut gibts hier auf den Turnpikes auch, aber die ist eher lächerlich (meist ~$1). Uns wundert jedesmal dass es sich lohnt an jede Station so viele Angestellte zu stellen wenn jedes Auto nur $1 zahlt.
• Wohnen, zumindest ist der Preis den ich für dieses Wohnheim zahle eigentlich eine Unverschämtheit.
