University Alert Status: Friday, September 5, 2008 1:00PM
Although the University of Connecticut is not currently in alert status, the following message is provided as a reminder to the University community of a significant weather event forecast for the region.
The National Weather Service indicates that storm Hanna is likely to produce gusty winds and heavy rainfall sometime Saturday and into Sunday, September 6th and 7th. Winds may gust to 50 mph or more and rainfall totals may approach 6 inches or more in some localized areas of the state during the time period. Additionally, other storms developing in the Atlantic Ocean may impact our area in the future.
The following precautions are provided as a public service for home and work and are established to minimize storm damage and impact on life and property both at your home and at the University:
- Post emergency telephone numbers in your residence or office.
- Fill your vehicle’s fuel tank.
- Close all exterior windows at offices, classrooms, and at home.
- Prepare for the possibility of power outages associated with storm conditions.
- Consider filling bathtub with water for toilet flush supply.
- Have a first aid kit, food, supplies, and water for 3–7 days.
- Have fresh batteries in flashlights and radio.
- Check supply of special items for infants and elderly.
- Have sufficient food and water for pets.
- Fully charge cellular phones.
- Do not attempt to drive through standing water on roadways.
UConn Emergency Management Personnel have been in contact with the State of Connecticut Department of Emergency Management and Homeland Security and have been briefed on the weather situation and received contact information in the event that emergency conditions should develop.
The University Emergency Operations Center located at Police/Fire Headquarters is not activated at this time and will be activated only if necessary.
